The authors lay the groundwork for understanding the debates in Germany about Jewish life, Israel and Palestine. In the first part, they explore why these debates are so heated in this country in particular.

The starting point for the Palestinian conflict is the historical development of the region. In the second part, the causes of the conflict – the emergence of Zionism and the various waves of Jewish immigration – are traced back not only to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, but long before that, to the second half of the 19th century.

The third part is devoted to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, a civil society initiative that has been striving since the beginning of this millennium to find a new solution to the Palestinian-Jewish antagonism beyond Hamas and Abbas. At the same time, the authors examine how this conflict affects freedom of expression in the United States and Germany, and how Israel is doing everything it can to combat this movement and discredit it as anti-Semitic.

In the last part of the book, they examine how Germany deals with accusations of “Israel-related anti-Semitism” and the resulting restrictions on freedom of expression.

In their detailed study, the authors endeavour to revive both the vision of a binational state of the Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt and that of the Palestinian orientalist and founder of postcolonial studies Edward Said.
